Après-ski in Big Sky, Montana
Big Sky is not one village, it is four: Mountain Village at the base, Meadow Village, Town Center and the Gallatin Canyon, strung along nine miles of highway. A free bus called Skyline connects them, and the practical effect is that you pick a node for the night rather than wandering between them.
Last chair: not retrievable, check posted hours
Base: 7,500 ft (Mountain Village)
Summit: 11,166 ft (Lone Peak)
Town: Town Center, nine miles from the base
When the lifts stop
Big Sky's hours pages load their lift times dynamically and we could not retrieve a posted closing time, so we are not printing one. The official page does list ticket windows at 8:45am to 5pm, and a November 25 winter opening. Check the day's posted lift hours before planning around them.
Where riders land
Mountain Village is where the day ends, at 7,500 feet under Lone Peak. The venues cluster around the plaza and the Arrowhead Mall, which is as walkable as Big Sky gets.
Town Center is the other option, nine miles away, a roughly 600-acre planned walking village built around a piazza, with its first infrastructure finished in 2001. Walkable once you are there, not walkable from the lifts. That nine miles is the whole decision: once you have taken the bus down, you have committed.
Getting around
Skyline is a zero-fare, year-round fixed route serving the Canyon, Meadow Village, Town Center, Mountain Village and Moonlight Basin, with an on-demand service called Big Sky Connect covering the gaps within each village.
What the cold actually does
December: Average high: 21°F; Average low: 4°F
January: Average high: 21°F; Average low: 4°F
February: Average high: 26°F; Average low: 7°F
The coldest market on this list. December and January highs sit at 21°F and lows at 4°F, and those are town figures, the summit is materially colder. A cotton sweatshirt here is strictly an indoor and in-the-truck layer.

No Big Sky venue publishes a founding year, which fits a resort that opened in 1973 next to no pre-existing town. One name to check before you drive: Lone Peak Brewery appears in older guides but its current status is unclear, so call ahead.
Getting there and parking
Bozeman Yellowstone International is about 45 miles north, roughly an hour in good conditions, south on US-191 through the Gallatin Canyon and then nine miles up MT-64. The canyon road hugs the Gallatin River the whole way, cell service is spotty to nonexistent in stretches, and late snow runs into May, carry chains or drive all-wheel. At the resort, shuttle-served lots run through the day with free parking further out and paid parking by the Exchange.
What the place is about
The scale is the headline: 5,850 skiable acres, 320 named runs, 40 lifts. Lone Peak stands over all of it at 11,166 feet, and the tram that serves it was replaced in December 2023 with a Doppelmayr system running two 75-passenger cabins, the opening marked the resort's 50th season.
Big Sky was founded by Chet Huntley, the Montana-born NBC news anchor, and opened in December 1973; Boyne Resorts bought it in 1976 after his death. It grew by absorption, taking in Spanish Peaks terrain and then Moonlight Basin in 2013.
What to wear after riding
Four nodes and a bus between them means your evening layer has to survive an outdoor wait at 4°F and then four hours inside a warm brewery. Nobody is pretending cotton solves the first half, that is what the shell is for. It solves the second half, which is where you actually spend the night.
