Après-ski in Jackson Hole, Wyoming

Jackson Hole has two après scenes and twelve miles between them. Teton Village is boots-on and immediate, the tram stops at 3pm, an hour before the lifts, so the base fills in waves. The town of Jackson, with its elk-antler arches on the square, is a bus ride away and a different night entirely.

Last chair: 4:00pm (tram 3:00pm)

Base: 6,311 ft

Summit: 10,450 ft

Town: 6,237 ft

When the lifts stop

Most lifts run 9am to 4pm for the posted 2026-27 season. The Aerial Tram runs 10am to 3pm, an hour earlier than everything else, and several lifts close between 2:30 and 3:40pm. Asterisked lifts run conditions and avalanche mitigation permitting. Opening day is November 27, 2026.

Where riders land

The tram closing at 3pm is the detail that shapes the afternoon. Riders coming off it are at the base an hour before the chairlift crowd, so Teton Village's après starts in stages rather than all at once.

What is unusual here is the commitment the geography forces. Twelve miles separate Teton Village from the town of Jackson. If you took the bus in, you cannot nip back to the car for a dry layer, what you are wearing at four o'clock is what you are wearing at ten.

Getting around

START: Southern Teton Area Rapid Transit, runs four routes between Jackson and the resort in peak winter. Fares are $3 each way to Teton Village, free within Jackson town limits, and free between the Stilson lot and the Village.

What the cold actually does

  • December: Average high: 26°F; Average low: 7°F

  • January: Average high: 26°F; Average low: 6°F

  • February: Average high: 30°F; Average low: 9°F

NOAA 1991 to 2020 normals. Average lows in single digits, and a twelve-mile transit between scenes. Cotton is the layer under the shell and the layer you live in indoors, never the outer layer on a night bus platform.

The Stagecoach's Sunday session is the one to plan around: the band has played Sunday evenings since February 1969, and the 10pm finish is a holdover from old liquor laws.

Getting there and parking

Jackson Hole Airport is the only commercial airport in the United States inside a national park, seven miles north of town in Grand Teton. The park's constraints are real, the terminal is capped at eighteen feet tall. Teton Pass on WY-22 hits a 10% grade and is often closed early mornings for avalanche control. Parking at the resort is free after 1pm in the Ranch Lot, and the Stilson lot seven miles out is free with frequent shuttles.

What the place is about

Corbet's Couloir is the mountain's signature: a ten to twenty foot drop into a chute, named for the instructor Barry Corbet who looked at it and said someone would ski it one day. Patroller Lonnie Ball did, in 1967. The Kings and Queens of Corbet's event runs it as a competition most Februaries.

In town, the four antler arches on the square are Rotary projects built between 1953 and 1969, made from antlers shed on the National Elk Refuge and collected by Boy Scouts. They get rebuilt periodically. The cowboy-town-meets-ski-resort tension is not marketing, wooden boardwalks and shops selling actual cowboy boots sit a twelve-mile drive from a 4,139-foot vertical.

What to wear after riding

This is the market where the sweatshirt earns its place by being the thing you do not take off. Two scenes, twelve miles, a bus in between, and average lows in single digits: whatever you put on at the base when the boots come off is what you are in for the night. Cotton indoors, shell over the top for the platform and the walk, that is the honest version.
