Après-ski in Whistler, British Columbia
Whistler's village was drawn in 1978 by a California landscape architect who deliberately refused the North American grid, and the result is a cobbled pedestrian stroll that physically connects the bases of two separate mountains. You come off the hill and you are already walking. Village-base highs sit at or just above freezing all winter, which makes this a damp evening rather than a brittle cold one.
Last chair: not yet published for 2026/27
Base: 675 m / 2,214 ft at the village; 653 m / 2,140 ft at Creekside
Summit: Whistler 2,182 m / 7,160 ft; Blackcomb 2,284 m / 7,494 ft
Town: the village is the base, no separate town to drive to
When the lifts stop
Winter 2026/27 lift times were not published when we checked, the official hours page was still showing summer operations. The season was announced to open November 20, 2026, conditions permitting. For shape only, in a recent season the base gondolas ran to 4pm while the alpine lifts closed at 3pm or earlier, and the two mountains close for the season weeks apart. Check the posted hours.
Where riders land
Three bases, and which one you finish at decides the evening. Whistler Mountain riders come down to the Village Gondola base at Mountain Square, where the Longhorn and the GLC sit, or ski out to Creekside and Dusty's. Blackcomb riders land either in Whistler Village at the Blackcomb Gondola or up in the Upper Village, where Merlin's is.
What makes this different from everywhere else on our list is that the walk between those bases is a pedestrian stroll, not a bus ride or a drive. The Village Stroll connects both ski hills through four public squares and more than a hundred shops and restaurants, and it was laid out on purpose to avoid right angles and straight sightlines.
If you want to cross between mountains without going down, the PEAK 2 PEAK Gondola links Whistler's Roundhouse to Blackcomb's Rendezvous: 4.4 km, and 436 m above the valley at its highest point.
Getting around
You mostly do not need transit inside the village, which is the point of it. Parking: the Village Day Lots are paid, roughly $2.75 to $5.25 an hour; the Blackcomb Upper Lots 6 to 8 are complimentary from 6am to midnight; and the Creekside Parkade has about 1,200 free underground stalls, 6am to 3am.
What the cold actually does
December: Average high: 32°F / 0°C; Average low: 22°F / -5°C
January: Average high: 33°F / 1°C; Average low: 23°F / -5°C
February: Average high: 38°F / 3°C; Average low: 24°F / -4°C
Environment and Climate Change Canada normals, at the village. Note what these numbers mean in practice: highs at or just above freezing every midwinter month. You finish the day damper here than you would in Colorado or Montana, and the evening is mild rather than brutal, which is exactly the window a dry cotton layer is good for.
Where people go
Longhorn Saloon: What it is: Patio bar at the base of Whistler Mountain, steps from the gondolas; Where: Mountain Square, Whistler Village; Since: Opened 23 December 1981 as The Longhorn Pub
Dusty's: What it is: Creekside institution, named after a taxidermied bronco that arrived in 1979; Where: Creekside base; Since: Opened 1969 as L'Après; renamed Dusty's in the late 1980s
Garibaldi Lift Co. (the GLC): What it is: Bar in the Whistler Village Gondola building, above the lift line; Where: Whistler Village, base of Whistler Mountain; Since: not listed
Merlin's: What it is: Blackcomb's base bar; Where: Upper Village, base of Blackcomb; Since: not listed
Four venues rather than seven, deliberately. Whistler's village has dozens of bars, but when we checked the official pages most were either showing summer hours only or could not be confirmed as open for the coming winter : Merlin's own page read "closed until Winter 2026/27". We would rather name four we are sure of than pad the list. The Longhorn's name, for what it is worth, came off a worthless Canadian Longhorn Petroleum share certificate belonging to the original owner.
Getting there and parking
Whistler is about 120 km / 75 miles north of Vancouver, roughly two hours on the Sea to Sky Highway: Highway 99, depending on road and traffic. Winter tires are mandatory: the resort states October through April, and the provincial requirement runs from October 1 with a minimum 3.5 mm tread and an M+S or mountain-snowflake marking, enforced with a fine. Without them you must carry chains and fit them at the checkpoint. The highway does close, flooding and crashes shut the Alice Lake to Whistler stretch one recent Christmas Eve, and avalanche closures happen north of Pemberton, beyond Whistler rather than on the Vancouver approach.
What the place is about
Whistler Mountain opened in 1966, built by a group who were looking for a venue to bid for the Olympics. The municipality incorporated in 1975, the village and Blackcomb both opened in December 1980, the two mountains merged in 1997, and the IOC awarded the 2010 Games in July 2003.
One correction worth making, because the resort's own history page gets it loosely wrong and most guides copy it: snowboarding was not held at Whistler in 2010. The halfpipe and the rest of the snowboard events ran at Cypress Mountain, closer to Vancouver. What Whistler hosted was alpine skiing at Creekside, plus the sliding sports and the Nordic events nearby.
The snowboard event that actually belongs to this place is the World Ski and Snowboard Festival, founded in 1996 out of a 1994 championships on Blackcomb and held every April. There are three glaciers across the combined terrain, and the Showcase T-bar is being replaced with a quad for 2026/27 to improve access to the Horstman and Blackcomb glacier terrain.
What to wear after riding
The village design is the argument here. You are not driving home and you are not waiting for a bus, you are walking a cobbled stroll between two mountain bases, in and out of rooms, in weather that hovers around freezing rather than dropping through it. That is the most sweatshirt-shaped evening on this whole list. The catch is the damp: coming off the hill wetter than you would in the Rockies makes the dry layer in your bag matter more, not less.

Common questions
Can you walk everywhere in Whistler Village?
Largely yes, that is what the Village Stroll is for. It is a pedestrian route connecting the bases of both mountains through four public squares, so the walk between Whistler Mountain's base and Blackcomb's is on foot.
What time does après start in Whistler?
Generally from about 3pm. Winter 2026/27 lift times had not been published when we checked, and the alpine lifts close before the base gondolas, so riders arrive in the village in stages. Check the posted hours.
Do you need winter tires to drive to Whistler?
Yes. The resort states winter tires are mandatory October through April on the Sea to Sky Highway, and vehicles without them must carry chains and fit them at the checkpoint. The provincial rule requires an M+S or mountain-snowflake marking with at least 3.5 mm of tread.
Was snowboarding held at Whistler in the 2010 Olympics?
No. Snowboarding ran at Cypress Mountain near Vancouver. Whistler hosted alpine skiing at Creekside, plus the sliding sports and Nordic events nearby.
