Après-ski at Mt. Baker, Washington
There is no village at Mt. Baker and no lodging on the mountain, so après here is a drive, not a walk. Lifts stop at 3:30pm, you get one beer at whichever lodge is open, and then everybody drives the seventeen-odd miles down the Mt. Baker Highway to Glacier. For a mountain this central to snowboarding, the after-party is startlingly small, and that is the point.
Last chair: 3:30pm
Base: 3,500 ft (White Salmon) / 4,300 ft (Heather Meadows)
Summit: 5,089 ft at the top of Chair 8
Town: Glacier, about 17 miles down the highway
When the lifts stop
9:00am to 3:30pm. The ski area is unusually direct about the caveat: operating days and hours depend wholly on conditions and weather, and times may vary day to day and sometimes minute to minute. Check the snow report.
Where riders land
Two base areas: White Salmon at 3,500 feet and Heather Meadows at 4,300, and a detail that catches people out: on quieter weekdays only one of them opens, and when a base is closed its lodge is closed with it. Check which one is running before you plan where to end the day.
After that, the geography does the deciding. There is nowhere to stay on the mountain, so every single person drives. The nearest lodging is Glacier, about seventeen miles down; Bellingham, the real base for most visitors, is around 56 miles and an hour plus.
Getting around
None. There is no shuttle and no bus, the mountain sits at the end of a dead-end state highway. Everybody drives, which makes the designated-driver conversation a real one here.
What the cold actually does
We are not printing temperatures for Mt. Baker. There is no climate-normals station at the 3,500 to 4,300 foot base elevation, and the figures that circulate are either for Glacier at 906 feet or for the 10,781-foot summit of the volcano, which is a different mountain altogether. What is documented is the character: this is maritime snow, wet and heavy rather than cold and dry, in a marine climate zone that very rarely drops below 0°F. Damp is the enemy here, not cold.

Milano's in Glacier appears in current-looking guides and is closed: worth knowing before you plan a dinner around it.
Getting there and parking
Fifty-six miles east of Bellingham at the end of SR 542. Chains are the standing rule on the upper stretch, the last 2.7 miles to Artist Point close for the winter in October and reopen in June, and the ski area states plainly that there is no cell service in some areas in and around the mountain, with cold cutting battery life on top of that. Get cash at Graham's in Glacier, because there is no ATM at the ski area.
What the place is about
The snowfall record is real and it is Baker's: 1,140 inches in the 1998-99 season, a world record for a single season, against a fifteen-year average of 688 inches.
The Legendary Banked Slalom has run since 1985, started by Bob Barci and Tom Sims, held in the natural halfpipe, and the trophy is duct tape and an embroidered Carhartt jacket. It exists because Baker was one of the very few areas in North America that welcomed snowboarders at the time. Terje Håkonsen has seven, Maëlle Ricker won seven straight from 2007 to 2013, and Craig Kelly took it in 1988, 1991 and 1993. The 2026 edition was cancelled for bare rock in the halfpipe banks; the next is set for February 19 to 21, 2027.
Baker is independently family-owned and intends to stay that way, the long-time general manager ran it from 1968 to 2024, and the family's position is that at the end of a 37-mile dead-end road without public utilities, it will probably never become a resort with hotels and condos.
What to wear after riding
Baker is the clearest case on this list for a dry change of clothes. Maritime snow means you finish the day wetter than you would in the Rockies, there is no hotel room to walk back to, and the next hour of your life is a drive down a mountain highway. The sweatshirt in the back of the car is not an accessory here, it is the thing that makes the drive bearable.
